Lighthouse at Galle has a very long history. The initial lighthouse of Galle was built by the British people in 1848. The first lighthouse building was about a 24.4-metre-high. This has been constructed using cast-iron plates which were imported from England, British architect Alexander Gordon is honoured for designing this and Messrs built it.
The lighthouse of Galle painted in white and located on the southwest bastion, Utrecht Bastion, of Galle fort on a side of Galle Harbor. It had a light with prolate reflectors, which could be seen from 19 kilometres. This building was, unfortunately, affected by the fire and destroyed long ago.
The present lighthouse which is about 26.5-metre-high was built several metres away from the original place it was built earlier and it was secondly built-in 1939.
